Abbott, LYMAN (1835-1922), a clergyman, son of Jacob Abbott, born in Massachusetts. He graduated at the University of New York and was admitted to the bar. He studied theology and was ordained in the Congregational Church in 1860. For five years he preached in Terre Haute, Ind., and later was pastor of the New England Church in New York City, but resigned in 1869. He edited the "Literary Record" of Harper's Magazine, the Illustrated Christian Weekly, and was associated with the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher on the Christian Union, afterward becoming editor in chief. In 1889 he became pastor of Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, where he remained for ten years, when he became editor of The Outlook, the successor of the Christian Union. Mr. Abbott wrote a Life of Henry Ward Beecher and edited Beecher's sermons. He also contributed frequently to leading magazines, upon religious themes.
