Acetanilid, as'et an'il id, a white crystalline powder made by treating aniline with acetic acid. It is highly poisonous, but because of its action in allaying pain it is frequently given as a medicine. It is the active and often dangerous principle in headache powders. Because acetanilid has caused a blood problem, it has been replaced by acetaminophen in most cases.
