Ad'dams, JANE (1860- ), an American social settlement worker, born at Cedarville, Ill. She graduated at Rockford Seminary, studied in Philadelphia, traveled in Europe and in 1889 established the Hull House social settlement in Chicago, becoming its head resident. Her energy and ability and her sympathy with the dwellers in the slums soon brought the settlement to prominence and made it the leading institution of its kind in the United States. Miss Addams early became a frequent contributor to magazines and wrote several books, of which the best known is Democracy and Social Ethics.
