AGLAONEMA (from aglaos, bright, and nema, a thread; supposed to refer to the shining stamens). ORD. Aroideae. Stove perennials, allied to Arum, and requiring similar treatment to the stove species of that genus. AGLAONEMA acutispathum (acute-spathed). fl., spadix sessile, 1 3/4in. long; spathe light green, 3 1/2in. long, 1 1/4in. broad, ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, widely expanded; scape as long as the petioles. l. 6in. to 8in. long, 2 1/2in. to 3 1/4in. broad, elliptic-ovate, acuminate, slightly oblique, rounded and slightly cuneate at base, the apex gradually attenuated into a fine point 1in. long; petioles 3in. to 4 1/2in. long, sheathing. Hong Kong (?), 1885. Nearly hardy. AGLAONEMA commutatum (changed).* fl. white. l. greyish-blotched. h. 1ft. Philippines, 1863. SYN. AGLAONEMA marantaefolium maculatum. AGLAONEMA Mannii (Mann's).* fl., spathe 2in. long, whitish, with a spadix one-third shorter, bearing white anthers and scarlet ovaries. l. elliptic-oblong, dark green. Stems thickish, erect. h. 1 1/2ft. Victoria Mountains, 1868. AGLAONEMA marantaefolium maculatum (Maranta-leaved, spotted). A synonym of AGLAONEMA commutatum. AGLAONEMA nebulosum (clouded). l. 5in. to 8in. long, 1in. to 1 1/2in. broad, oblong or obovate-oblong, obliquely cuspidate-acuminate at apex, obtuse at base, green, irregularly marked with greenish-white above; petioles 1 1/2in. to 2in. long, channelled above, sheathed. AGLAONEMA pictum compactum (compact). fl., spathe green, pointed, the outer surface shining. l. short, oblong-ovate, acuminate, unequal-sided, dark sap-green, sparingly blotched grey; petioles sheathing, green, with a membranous, whitish margin. Stems very short, erect. Java, 1888.
