Al'bemarle Sound is situated in the north-east part of North Carolina, extending from the mouths of the Chowan and the Roanoke rivers north to the Atlantic coast, from which it is separated by a long is island. Its length is about 55 miles, and its width from 4 to 15 miles. The water is shallow and is nearly fresh.
