Ambala, am bah'la, or Umballa, um bahl'la, a town of India, in the Punjab, 150 mi. n. w. of Delhi. It has a flourishing trade in grain and other commodities. The town was founded in the fourteenth century. Population, 79,300; in the late 1990s, the estimated population was 285,809.
