A'pis, a bull to which divine honors were paid by the ancient Egyptians, who regarded him as a symbol of Osiris. He was not suffered to live beyond twenty-five years, but was secretly drowned by the priests in a sacred well. Another bull with the sacred marks was selected in his place, often only after a long search. His birthday was annually celebrated, and his death was followed by a season of public mourning.
