Ascension, as sen'shun, an island of volcanic origin belonging to Great Britain, near the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, 750 mi. n. w. of Saint Helena. It is retained by Great Britain mainly as a station at which ships may touch for stores. It has a naval yard, a victualing station, hospitals and a coal depot. It was discovered in 1501 on Ascension Day. Population, about 400.
