Atacama, ah'tah kah'ma, a desert region on the west coast of South America, belonging to 'Chile. It forms the chief mining district of Chile, containing silver, gold, lead, copper, nickel, cobalt and iron mines. It has an area of 28,350 square miles and a population of 69,372.
