Ax'olotl, a larval salamander, living in the lakes about Mexico. The young have bushy external gills similar to those of the mud puppy. A remarkable fact about these salamanders is that they remain permanently in the larval condition and never are transformed into adults. One species, the black Mexican axolotl, is highly valued as food by the Mexicans.
