BANNOCK: in Scotland and the northern counties of England, a flat round cake made of oat, rye or barley meal, baked on the hot hearth or on an iron plate over the fire. The bannock is the primitive cake, varied in material, of every country. For consumption in this country, bannocks are enriched by adding chopped almonds, orange peel, etc., to the dough.
