Bilboes, bil'boze, an apparatus formerly used by the Spaniards for confining the feet of offenders on board ships. It consisted of a long bar of iron, with shackles sliding on it and with a lock at one end to keep them from getting off. This was one of the means of putting offenders "in irons."
