Black, WILLIAM (1841-1898), a Scottish novelist, born in Glasgow. His first novel, Love or Marriage, was moderately successful, but In Silk Attire, Kilmeny and, especially, A Daughter of Heth, gained him an increasingly wide circle of readers. Among his later works are The Strange Adventures of a Phacton, A Princess of Thule, Green Pastures and Piccadilly, Macleod of Dare, White Wings, Judith Shakespeare, Madcap Violet and In Far Lochaber. Black is decidedly at his best when dealing with the Scotch Highlands, where most of his scenes are laid.
