Coal is mined in the vicinity and there are extensive rolling mills, malleable iron works, foundries, machine shops, breweries, glass factories and flour mills. The city contains one of the largest stockyards in the United States and the packing industry is important. East Saint Louis was incorporated as a city in 1865 and has experienced a rapid growth since 1870. Population in 1910, 58,547.
