ek sen'trik, a term in mechanics applied to contrivances for converting circular into sliding forth and back motion. It consists of variously-shaped disks so attached to a revolving shaft that the center of the disk does not coincide with the center of the shaft. An eccentric wheel is a wheel fixed on an axis that does not pass through the center. Its action is that of a crank of the same length as the eccentricity.
