(1822-1910), the founder of Christian Science, was born at Bow, N. H., and educated in the public schools and by private tutors. She removed to the South and married Col. George W. Glover, of Charleston, S. C., where she resided for several years. In 1877 she married Dr. Asa G. Eddy. She dates her discovery of Christian Science from 1866, and began teaching it in 1867. The first church was founded in Boston in 1879, and in 1881 Mrs. Eddy opened the Massachusetts Metaphysical College. For a number of years she frequently delivered lectures, and she was widely known as a writer. Her chief work is Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures, which appeared in 1875. This is the text-book of the denomination and has gone through many editions. Some of her other publications are Miscellaneous Writings and Unity of Good. See CHRISTIAN SCIENCE.
