(1767-1849), an English novelist. In conjunction with her father she had published Practical Education and Essay on Irish Bulls before the appearance of her first novel, Castle Rackrent, in 1801. This tale of Irish life immediately established her reputation. It was followed by a long series of novels and moral and popular tales, among which may be mentioned Belinda, Leonora, Ennui, The Absentee and Helen. Her novels are marked by quiet humor and by a sympathetic presentation of Irish life.
