surnamed the Confessor (about 1004-1066), king of England, son of Ethelred II. On the death of his half-brother, Hardicanute the Dane, in 1041, he was called to the throne and thus renewed the Saxon line. He cared little for political matters and spent most of his time in holy works. In 1161 he was canonized.
