(1839- ), an American writer, brother of Edward Eggleston, born in Vevay, Ind. He was educated at Asbury University and Richmond College, Va. Later he practiced law in Virginia and was a Confederate soldier throughout the Civil War. He then turned to journalism, became editor in chief of Hearth and Home, literary editor of the New York Evening Post and finally editorial writer for The World. Among the books which he has published are A Rebel's Recollections, The Wreck of the Red Bird, The Juggernaut and Dorothy South.
