el pah'so, the county-seat of El Paso co., on the Rio Grande, 300 mi. w. of Dallas, being a terminus of the Texas Pacific, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, the Mexican Central railroads and an important point on the Southern Pacific. The city is in a cattle country and carries on a large trade. There are smelting works, cigar factories and other industries. Saint Joseph's Academy, a Congregational training school, a theological seminary and a school of mines are located here. The town was first settled in 1827 and became a city in 1869. It was long an unimportant village, but has developed rapidly since 1880. Population in 1910, 39,279.
