(1809-1884), a German-American botanist, who was educated in the universities of Heidelberg and Berlin, and practiced medicine in Saint Louis, edited a German newspaper and acted as botanist in the government surveys of North America. By his will he left to the Missouri Botanical Gardens his large herbarium and his library.
