(1852- ), an American statesman, born on a farm in Ohio, educated at Ohio Wesleyan University and admitted to the bar in 1874. He practiced law for a number of years in Indianapolis and in 1897 was elected United States senator from Indiana and was reelected in 1903. In 1898 he was a member of the British-American joint high commission and chairman of the American commissioners. In 1904 he was elected vice-president of the United States on the Republican ticket.
