a large inlet of the Atlantic, on the east coast of North America, separating Nova Scotia from New Brunswick. It is about 100 miles long and 30 to 50 miles wide. At its inner extremity it divides into Chignecto Bay and Minas Channel and Basin, with smaller continuations. It is noted for its impetuous tides, which cause a rise and fall of from 12 to 70 feet and make navigation dangerous. At its entrance are Grand Manan and other islands. This bay receives the Saint John and Saint Croix rivers.
