Gaea, or Ge, je'a or je, in Grecian mythology, the goddess of the earth. She seems to have been regarded as the personification of the earth. She is described as the first born of Chaos. She became the wife of Uranus, personification of the heavens, and the mother of the Titans. The worship of Gaea extended throughout all Greece, and many temples and altars were erected in her honor. She was an oracular goddess, and the oracles of Delphi and Olympia are believed to have at one time belonged to Gaea. She was called Tellus among the Romans. In some accounts, Eros, the god of Love, is born of Chaos, and creates the earth and persuades Gaea to marry Uranus. See EROS.
