(1827-1896), an American soldier, born in Pennsylvania. In 1847 he graduated at West Point. He was for a time instructor there, and in 1861 he entered the Union army. He took part in the second Battle of Bull Run and in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg and was twice wounded. In 1864 he was made major general of volunteers and in the following year brigadier general and then major general in the regular army.
