the channel which forms an entrance from the Atlantic into the Mediterranean. The narrowest part is a little to the west of Gibraltar, and is 15 miles wide. A strong and constant current flows into the Mediterranean from the Atlantic Ocean, in the middle of the strait, but the under current, as well as two feeble lateral currents along the coast, set toward the ocean.
