a fish of the seabream family, common in the Mediterranean. It has strong grinding teeth, for crushing the shells of mollusks, on which it feeds. Its general color is a mixture of silver and sky-blue, its dorsal and caudal fins are black, while its sides are marked with golden bands, and between its eyes is a crescent-shaped yellow spot. It is a fine fish and sometimes reaches a weight of twenty pounds.
