Glacier Bear Ursus emmonsi (Dall) Length. 4 feet. Description. General colour resembles that of the silver fox. For remarkably soft, with a rich under-fur of a bluish-black shade, many of the long hairs white. Dorsal line black; sides mingled black and silvery white, beneath grayish-white; outer side of limbs black; sides of muzzle and lower anterior parts of cheek bright tan colour; no shade of brown elsewhere on the fur. Claws short, strongly curved, and sharp; ears very short. Range. Glacier region Mount St. Elias, etc., to Juneau, Alaska. This curious and little-known animal is an inhabitant of the St. Elias Alps, frequenting the edges of the glaciers. It is known to fur-dealers by the name of blue bear, and is said to be shy and less fierce than other species.
