a genus of plants of the iris family, containing about ninety species, natives of Europe and Africa, but especially numerous in South Africa. The gladioli are extensively grown in Europe and the United States, both indoors and out, because of the large, brilliant flowers, varying from white to rose and crimson in color. They are arranged in long, one-sided clusters, which are raised on a tall stem from among long, sword-shaped leaves.
