Glauber, glow'ber, John Rudolph (1604-1668), a German alchemist and physician. He was born in Bavaria. He died at Amsterdam. He was a believer in the philosopher's stone, an upholder of mineral remedies, the writer of thirty treatises, and a generous contributor to the progress of chemistry. Glauber is remembered now chiefly as the discoverer of what is known as Glauber's salts, a once popular household remedy.
