glow'burz, sulphate of sodium, so called because of the importance attached to its chemical and medicinal properties by Glauber, its discoverer. It forms large colorless prisms, which turn to powder on exposure to the air. It is soluble in water, and when heated it melts in its water of crystallization. It is found in many localities, both dissolved in the water of mineral springs and of salt lakes and as a powder around them. The chief medicinal use of Glauber's salt is as a purgative, but it is only used by veterinarians.
