(1816-1904), an American editor and author, born in Paterson, N. J. He graduated from Princeton University and practiced law in Kentucky for a time, but soon became associated with his father-in-law, William Cullen Bryant, in the editing of the New York Evening Post. He contributed articles to other papers and magazines and at various times helped to edit several magazines. His numerous publications include translations from German authors, several volumes of biography, Political Essays and Vala: A Mythological Tale. He has also edited a Life and Works of William Cullen Bryant.
