an ancient city of India, 7 mi. n. w. of Hyderabad. The ruins include the burial places of the ancient sovereigns of the kingdom of Golconda, and an ancient fortress, which is now used as a state prison. Golconda was of old famous for diamonds, which, however, were probably found in the territory to the south of the city and were merely cut and polished at Golconda. The expression "richer than Golconda" became proverbial.
