the science of language, which treats of the words of which a language is composed and of the laws that govern their use. English grammar is generally discussed under four broad divisions: orthography, which treats of the proper spelling of words; etymology, which treats of the parts of speech and their inflections; syntax, which treats of the relations of words in sentences, and prosody, which treats of the laws of versification. Comparative grammar treats of the resemblances and differences of languages and of their relations, as the relation of the Anglo-Saxon to our present English tongue. See ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
