gwahm, gwah hahn', the largest of the Ladrone Islands in the Pacific, 1500 mi. e. of Manila, discovered by Magellan in 1521. Agana, the former Spanish capital of the Ladrones, is situated upon this island. It formerly belonged to Spain, but by a treaty at the close of the Spanish-American War, it came into the hands of the United States. It is a naval station and a port of transit between America and Asia. The surface is mountainous and the soil fertile, producing rice, cocoanut and indigo. Population, about 9000.
