gahr'de an, in law, the custodian of a person incapable of directing himself; especially, the custodian of an infant--that is, a person under twenty-one years of age. A guardian is not allowed to reap any benefit from his ward's estate, but must account for all profits. He can invest the money of his ward in real estate only by order of the court, and he can convert real estate into personality only by a similar order. If he spends more than the interest and profits of the estate in the maintenance and education of the ward, without permission of court, he may be held liable for the principal thus consumed. He is entitled to the care and custody of the person of his ward. Guardianship lasts until the ward has attained majority.
