gurn'zy, the second largest and most western of the Channel Islands, lying off the north coast of France, 46 mi. from Cherbourg and about 68 mi. s. e. of Start Point in Devonshire. The breeding of cattle and the dairy are the principal objects of attention; and the butter made is considered excellent. The island is especially famous for its fine breed of cows. Horticulture and floriculture also receive much attention, and fruits, especially figs and grapes, are very abundant. The chief towns are Saint Peter Port, the capital, and Saint Sampson.
