Hebe, he'be, the goddess of youth. She was the daughter of Zeus and Hera, and was cupbearer to the gods. She was a type of health and beauty. Hera gave her to Hercules in marriage. According to one account, she resigned her office in consequence of a fall; according to another, she ceased to give the gods their wine after she had become the wife of Hercules. She was succeeded in the office of cupbearer by Ganymede. The name of Hebe is symbolical of exuberant and beautiful youth.
