Kalevala, kah'la vah'lah. The Finnish poems which have been preserved by oral tradition from the times of heathendom, were gradually dying out, when Lonnrot grouped together, in one whole, all the fragments he could find and published them as the national epic of the Finnish people, under the title of Kalevala.
