an inlet of the Mediterranean, on the west coast of Italy, extending for about 22 mi. from Cape Miseno, its northwest boundary, to Cape Campanella, its southeast limit. It is separated from the open sea by the islands of Procida, Ischia and Capri. Its shores have been for ages the scene of powerful volcanic agency, and the scenery has long been celebrated for its beauty and grandeur. Mount Vesuvius is the most distinctive and striking feature.
