wah hah'kah, a city of Mexico, capital of the State of Oaxaca, situated 22 mi. s. e. of the City of Mexico, near the Rio Verde and on the Mexican Southern railroad. The city is substantially built and has some fine streets and buildings. The principal institutions are the priests' seminary, an institute of science and art, a museum of antiquities and numerous convents. The city is famous for the cultivation of cochineal cactus, many gardens and plantations being located in the suburbs. Textiles, chocolate, soap and perfumery are also manufactured, and there is a considerable trade in sugar. Population in 1900, 35,049.
