(1806-1879), an American capitalist and philanthropist, born in Groton, Conn. He went to Pennsylvania, engaged in various canal and railroad enterprises, and became the richest man in the state. He was a member of the Pennsylvania legislature and served two terms in Congress. Lehigh University was liberally endowed by him.
