(1853- ), an American novelist, born in Virginia. He was educated at Washington and Lee University and at the University of Virginia and practiced law in Richmond. Among his writings, the most of which treat sympathetically of life in the South, are Marse Chan, his first successful story, published later in a volume called In Old Virginia; Two Little Confederates; Unc' Edinburg; Red Rock, and Gordon Keith.
