(1731-1814), an American lawyer, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, born in Boston, Mass. He was educated at Harvard University and studied for the ministry, but was admitted to the bar and was a delegate to the provincial and Continental congresses. After the Revolution he held the offices of attorney general of Massachusetts and associate justice of the state supreme court.
