first baron (1788-1855), English field-marshal. He entered the army in 1804 and served on Sir Arthur Wellesley's staff in the expedition to Copenhagen. He acted as military secretary to the latter during the Peninsular War, in which he greatly distinguished himself at the capture of Badajoz. In Wellington's campaign of 1815 he took a prominent part, and lost his right arm at Waterloo. From 1815 to 1818 he acted as secretary to the embassy at Paris, and from 1819 to 1852 he was military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. In 1852 he was made master general of the ordnance and was elevated to the House of Lords as Baron Raglan. On the breaking out of the Crimean War, he was appointed commander of the forces.
