Valkyries, val kir' eez, in Northern mythology, the attendants of Odin, who, at his command, hovered ever battlefields and bore the souls of the bravest of the slain to Valhalla, Odin's great hall. Here the Valkyries waited upon the heroes, serving them mead in vessels made from skulls. They were sometimes regarded as the personification of the clouds, especially of storm clouds.
