Valladolid, a city of Spain, situated on the Pisuerga River, 100 mi. n. w. of Madrid. It is an old town and contains a number of interesting structures, among them the house in which Columbus died and the house which Cervantes occupied. The city has a fine park and a university, which was founded about the middle of the fourteenth century. The industries include textile, glove, paper and pottery manufactures. The trade in grain is of considerable importance. During the latter part of the Middle Ages, Valladolid was the capital of Castile, and after the union of that kingdom and Aragon, it was the capital of the combined kingdoms until it was replaced by Madrid.
