Vallandigham, val lan'de gam, CLEMENT BAIRD (1820-1871), an American politician, born at New Lisbon, Ohio, educated at Jefferson College, Pa., and admitted to the bar. He was elected to the legislature in 1845, to the national Congress in 1857, there becoming noted as the most radical Democrat in that body and as the most bitter opponent of Lincoln's administration. After retiring from Congress in 1863, he aroused such bitter opposition by his criticism of the President that he was arrested, tried by court martial and sentenced to imprisonment in Fort Warren. President Lincoln changed the sentence to exile to the Confederacy. Vallandigham later escaped to Canada, and in 1864 he was nominated for governor of Ohio, but was defeated by an-overwhelming majority. He accidentally shot himself, while engaged in trying a murder case in 1871.
