Walcheren, vahl'Keren, the most westerly island of the Netherlands, in the Province of Zealand, situated at the mouth of the Scheldt. It is low and level, and a portion of it, being below the high-water mark, is protected by dikes. The island is 13 miles long and 10 miles wide. The inhabitants are engaged in agriculture and cattle-raising. The chief town is Middelburg. Population, about 42,000.
