Yarmouth or Great Yarmouth, a seaport and watering place of England, situated on the east coast, 19 mi. e. of Norwich. The town occupies a narrow peninsula between the Yare River and the North Sea and is connected by bridges with Suffolk and other places on the right bank of the Yare. The river is lined with extensive piers and Yarmouth is an important commercial port. It is also the chief center of the herring fishery of England. The industries include shipbuilding and the manufacture of ropes, nets and sails. Population in 1901, 51,316.
